Making mittens could save your life. Yep, you read that right.
Partnering with Anishinabek Nation HIV program to change the conversation around HIV and hepatitis C, mitten making workshops were held in Dokis First Nation in 2024. Hide pieces, embroidered cuff designs and sinew were supplied and community members and healthcare team members learned about the myths and facts of HIV and hepatitis C while their hands were busy sewing.
Laughter, food, working together and learning together highlights the importance of relationship in sharing knowledge. Liver wellness is important, and hepatitis C is curable, sharing this works to remove stigma and build trust. Sharing information in a setting where hands are busy and we are comfortable creates a brave space for asking questions, supporting open discussion and building capacity for action.
When people understand the importance of the liver, the damage that hepatitis C can do in your liver without you feeling it, and the various ways that you can be exposed to this virus, we create heart engagement in the process and motivate action to get screened, and screening can save your life.
